NATASHA SHANGARI
DESIGNER, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, TEXTILE DESIGNER
“In my work, I explore the intersections of identity, rituals, and sanctuary through the lens of being a Kenyan-American femme. Throughout my life, I've moved between several states and have lived between America and Africa. My sense of home has always been elusive and my practice is something that moves with me and helps ground me. Design is my primary medium because I feel style and how we choose to fashion our bodies is an extension of identity. Fashion just gives us the tools to assemble how we visually represent our identities day-to-day.”
BLACK & LIMITLESS
“So often black people especially black artists are put into boxes based on their blackness. It's a aspect of myself that I love deeply, although I do not want to be limited by the what's expected of black people. The black experience is multi-dimensional and limitless.”
